Arken Optics Review: SH4 6-24X50 GEN2 FFP [2024]

Arken Optics Review

Arken is a rising star in the optics world. Their flagship product is the SH4, which is a very impressive FFP rifle scope. Boasting two reticle styles and units of measure, there’s an option for everyone.

So, how does this scope measure up to the competition in 2024, and does it get the HuntersHalt stamp of approval? Well, the short answer: it does. Arken got the recipe for a good long-range scope spot on. The scope is not too heavy, it’s extremely budget-friendly, and it offers some premium-tier features.

For our review, we placed it through a series of rating factors to determine the quality of the Arken. We also identified areas that potential buyers should look at before making the investment. Finally, we addressed some common questions like whether it is good for hunters and whether it is worth the cost.

How Do I Rate The Arken Optics SH4 Gen 2?

Like all our rating guides, we make sure to be thorough. That said, we took the Arket SH4 Gen 2 through 12 rating factors to analyze how well it performs.

  1. Magnification Power
  2. Lens Quality
  3. Reticle Type
  4. Durability and Build Quality
  5. Adjustment Features
  6. Eye Relief
  7. Field of View
  8. Weight and Size
  9. Compatibility with the Rifle
  10. Price and Budget
  11. Brand Reputation
  12. Scope Use Case

1. Magnification Power

In terms of magnification power, it doesn’t get better than the SH4 Gen 2’s magnification range of 6-24x.  I think it’s perfect for long-range shooting use cases like competitive shooting and hunting while still offering a low enough magnification for close-range shooting.

2. Lens Quality

Since their inception, Arken Optics has impressed me with their rifle scopes’ lens quality, and the SH4 Gen 2 is no exception.

With Japanese ELD glass, the clarity at high magnifications is impressive, and the fully multi-coated lenses ensure maximum light transmission for a clear, bright image even in low light conditions.

The 50mm objective lens further enhances low light performance, ensuring you always have a clear view of your target, regardless of the time of day or weather conditions.

3. Reticle Type

The SH-4J comes with two reticle types – the VPR and VHR. Personally, I prefer the VPR, which is your christmas tree style reticle. At long distances, the VPR reticle really comes in handy when adjusting for wind drift.

However, both reticle types offer accurate holdovers and are available in both MIL and MOA units of measure.

Furthermore, I really appreciate the illuminated reticle with Zero Stop. Coupled with the first focal plane design, and you get one incredibly accurate long-range scope.

4. Durability and Build Quality

The SH-4J is built to last. It has a robust 34mm tube, which features quality and Arken ingenuity. This ensures longevity and reliability during extended use in the field.

5. Adjustment Features

The turrets on the SH4 Gen 2 provide tactile and audible clicks with 8 MILs/20 MOA per revolution for elevation and windage. I like the loud clicks because it allows me to make adjustments with confidence, ensuring I don’t miss a click.

The Zero Stop system is another favorite, rapidly returning to zero, making it convenient for shooters to make repeatable shots.

6. Eye Relief

With a good eye relief of 3.5 inches, the SH4 Gen 2 provides an aiming platform that caters even to those wearing glasses, like myself. Another huge benefit of comfortable eye relief is the reduced chance of brow injury from that heavy-recoil calibers you’ll be using the SH-4J with.

7. Field of View

The field of view impressed me. It ranges from 18.55-4.65 feet at 100 yards, which is quite expansive at lower magnifications and allows for quick target acquisition. At higher magnifications, the narrower FOV allows you to focus on a specific target without getting distracted by surrounding objects.

8. Weight and Size

Weighing in at 24.71 ounces, the SH4 Gen 2 is the perfect weight for a long-range scope. Although I wouldn’t take it on a hiking trek through the Rocky Mountains without proper exercise beforehand.

The SH-4J’s 13.8-inch length is fairly standard for scopes with this level of magnification and features.

9. Compatibility with the Rifle

The SH-4J is a good scope for any precision rifle used in long-range shooting and hunting. I would just make sure I invest in a very high-quality scope mount, especially if you’re planning on shooting .308+ calibers – if it’s loosely mounted and the recoil is intense, it can lead to scope damage.

10. Price and Budget

Considering its features, the SH4 Gen 2 offers tremendous value for money. To combine quality and excellent craftsmanship in the manner Arken did, and then offer that product at only $499.99 speaks volumes of the company.

11. Brand Reputation

Arken is a rising star, and once they are more established, their prices are likely to increase. They are still very new to the scene, with very few products to show, but the optics they do have are of very high quality.

12. Scope Use Case

The SH4 Gen 2 is versatile enough to be used for basically any shooting use case that involves long-range shooting.

It is especially good for use in precision rifle series, hunting, and tactical applications where distance and accuracy are paramount.

What Are The Most Important Factors To Consider Before Buying The Arken SH4 Gen 2?

Arken scope review

If you’re serious about the Arken SH4 Gen II, there are four factors you should look at first. If you are happy with all of them, then you know you’ll be buying a tailor-made optic for you.

  • Use Case: Understanding the primary application of the scope is essential. The SH4 Gen 2 is particularly suitable for hunters and marksmen who need a long-range optic that is affordable but offers exceptional performance. Its robust build and precision also make it suitable for competitive shooting and tactical scenarios.
  • Magnification: The 6-24x magnification range offers a versatile spectrum suitable for both mid-range engagements and long-distance shots. Consider the type of shooting you’ll be doing most frequently and whether this range meets your needs. If most of your shooting activities are within 200 yards, I wouldn’t recommend you buy the Arken – it will be like using a .300 Win Mag for hunting turkeys; why use something so overpowered?
  • Price: Evaluate the scope against your budget. The SH4 Gen 2 is positioned as a mid-range scope in terms of price but offers a lot of premium features, making it one of the best value-buys of 2024.
  • Brand Reputation: The brand is still a rising star, but the team behind Arken is amazing and experts in the field of rifle optics.

Is The Arken SH4 Gen 2 Good For Hunters?

Yes, the Arken SH4 Gen 2 is a great option for hunters. While it hasn’t made its way on our list of best hunting scopes, it is a strong contender as a future addition.

Its wide magnification range allows for precise shots at various distances, and the illuminated VPR is exactly what you need for long-range hunting. The solid build quality ensures the scope can handle the rugged outdoors, and the Zero Stop feature is incredibly useful for returning to a known distance after making elevation adjustments.

Do Arken Optics Have Variable Magnification?

Yes, Arken Optics offers variable magnification across their product line. This includes their LPVO scopes, such as the EP-8, and the SH4 Gen 2 is no exception.

Is The Arken SH4 Gen 2 Worth It For The Cost?

If you’re willing to trust a relatively new optic brand, then I’d say the SH4 Gen 2 is definitely worth the cost at only $499.

With features like Japanese ELD glass, an illuminated first focal plane reticle, and solid mechanical construction, it competes with higher-priced scopes on the market. For shooters looking for a reliable, high-performing scope without an exorbitant price tag, the SH4 Gen 2 is certainly worth considering.

Does Arken Have A Good Reputation?

Arken is new to the optics table but is introducing a lot of ingenuity and innovation. They are quickly building a strong follower base, one that many people are getting behind, myself included.

The Bottom Line

The Arken SH4 Gen 2 is a highly capable scope that meets the rigorous demands of hunters, competitive shooters, and tactical marksmen alike. With its flexible magnification range, superior lens quality, and robust construction, it represents a smart investment for anyone looking to enhance their shooting experience.

Arken’s reputation for quality optics at fair prices further solidifies the SH4 Gen 2 as a worthy addition to any shooter’s toolkit. Whether you’re tracking game in the wilderness or aiming for the bullseye at a thousand yards, the SH4 Gen 2 is equipped to help you achieve your shooting goals with confidence and precision.
