If you’re looking for a red dot sight that won’t let you down, the Aimpoint Comp M5 is a great option. It’s rugged and reliable, and it provides a clear-sight picture even in low-light conditions. The Aimpoint Comp M5 is a Matte Black red dot reflex sight with a 2 MOA reticle.

Test #1: Durability

When it comes to red dot sights, durability is important. After all, you don’t want your sight to break the first time you drop it or fire some rounds in poor weather conditions. Aimpoint makes very durable optiocs. In fact, this is why most shooters use an Aimpoint red dot on their AK-47 & other weapons.

Luckily enough both optics are water-resistant up to a certain depth.

  • Aimpoint Comp M5: Can be submerged up to 45m
  • Aimpoint T2: Can be submerged up to 25m

Just reading these stats you might think it’s a no-brainer…right? I don’t know about you but I am not a navy seal. In fact, I can’t even imagine a situation in which I would need to submerge my weapon more than 20 m in the water! All that to say this really didn’t mean much to me. For practical purposes, this was a draw.

Winner: Draw

Test #2: Price Comparison

Although price is not a feature of either red dot sight, it is obviously an important factor. The truth is, some of us have much larger budgets than others. In my experience, there are great optics in most price ranges. Just like with any other product…you get what you pay for.

When comparing the Comp M5 vs T2 it is nearly a wash. They are priced within 5-6% of each other. For me, the price difference is not enough alone to sway me one way or another. If we were talking several hundred bucks it might be a different story.

However, the Comp M5 is the cheaper optic and takes the cake in terms of price. For some shooters, this price difference will be more meaningful than for others.

Winner: Aimpoint Comp M5

Test #3: Battery Life

The Aimpoint T2 a CR2032 battery. This is pretty much standard as far as red dot sights go. You can find CR2032 batteries on Amazon & other major retailers for just a few dollars.

The Comp M5 runs on a AAA battery. This is really the major difference between these two popular optics. A single AAA battery is very easy to find which can make it appealing to some gun owners. Just about any convenience store, gas station, or grocery store in America carries these batteries.

Both the Comp M5 & T2 have a battery life of 50,000 hours. However, because AAA batteries are so easy to come by, I’ll give the edge on battery life to the Comp M5.

Winner: Aimpoint Comp M5

Test #4: Adjustability

Low-quality red dot optics often come with very limited adjustability. The ability to adjust your reticle to match your shooting conditions is extremely valuable for hunters and tactical situations.

The Comp M5 has 4 night vision settings & 6 daylight settings. The Aimpoint T2 has an off setting, 4 separate night vision settings, and 8 daylight settings. Although both sights are compatible with night vision devices, it is clear the T2 has an edge in adjustability.

After testing both the Comp M5 & T2 in dim and bright light settings, I noticed a major issue. Even with the brightness settings turned to max intensity on the Comp M5 the reticle was still too dim for bright light conditions. On full power, I found Aimpoint T2 to have a much brighter dot. Our post comparing the Aimpoint acro c2 vs p2 demonstrated that most Aimpoint optics are highly adjustable.

Winner: Aimpoint T2

Test #5: Sight Accessories

When it comes down to the accessories & details of the Aimpoint Comp M5 and T2, they are very similar.

  • Both are 2 MOA dots
  • Both optics have the same windage & elevation settings
  • Both optics have a flip-up lens covers
  • Both produce a similar sight picture

Winner: Draw

Test #6: Versatility

Red dot sights are not super cheap. So when I go out shopping, normally I want an optic than I can switch out between my different weapons. The versatility of the optic is important.

  • Aimpoint Comp M5: Primarly a long gun optic (AR’s)
  • Aimpoint Micro T2: Can be used effectively on submachine guns, rifles, and even pistols.

If you ask me, it is probably overkill to put a T2 on a handgun. However, it’s nice to have the versatility and some shooters might use it. The smaller size of the Aimpoint T2 makes it a more versatile optic that can be used on a variety of weapons in a variety of different situations. Simply pop off the front lens cover, and the T2 is ready to go.

Winner: Aimpoint T2

Test #7: Sight Size

picture comparing the size of the Aimpoint comp M5 and Aimpoint T2

Some red dot sights are simply too big. They take up too much rail space and can add unnecessary weight to your firearm. Worse still, they can obscure your field of view and make it difficult to find your target.

I personally prefer to keep red dot sights small and compact. When comparing the size of the Comp M5 vs T2…the Comp M5 is bigger is just about every way.

  • Length: M5 – 3.4″; T2 – 2.7″
  • Width: M5- 1.6″; T2 – 1.6″
  • Height: M5- 2.8″; T2 – 1.4″
  • Weight: M5- 5.2 oz; T2 – 3.3 oz

The Aimpoint T2 is about 60% lighter than the Comp M5. Now, we are only talking about a few ounces here so it won’t be a huge deal. For someone who uses guns for hunting and self-defense like myself, a few ounces is not really a factor. For some professionals in tactical settings weight can make a huge difference. Nonetheless, the Aimpoint T2 is the lighter & more compact optic.

Winner: Aimpoint T2

Test #8: Lens & Reticle Quality

When shopping for a new red dot sight you have to keep lens and reticle quality in mind. A poor-quality lens can result in a fuzzy image, making it difficult to accurately target your shots. And a poorly aligned reticle can cause your shots to go astray.

After testing both sights I have to say it’s a draw. Both contain advanced optical lenses that produce the ultimate dot clarity. In my opinion, there is no substantial difference in the lens quality between the Aimpoint Comp M5 & T2.

Winner: Draw

Which Is More Popular: Comp M5 vs T2?

After talking to friends, scanning message boards, and reading customer reviews there is no doubt that the Aimpoint T2 is the more popular option. For me its simple. The T2 outperforms the M5 is just about every way. In fact, aside from the price, I have a hard time understanding why anyone would choose the M5 red dot reflex sight in the first place!

Aimpoint H2 vs T2

Both the Aimpoint T2 & Aimpoint H2 red dot sights are high-quality optics. They are compatible with most weapons and are great in a variety of use cases (hunting, tactile, self-defense, etc.). However, the main difference between the two sites is their adjustability of brightness settings. The T2 offers 8 daytime settings & the H2 offers 12 daytime brightness settings.
