Diamondback Tactical 4-16×44 FFP Scope Review In 2024

Diamondback review

The Diamondback Tactical is a medium-range scope from Vortex, ideal for hunters and competition shooters who shoot within 500 yards.

During my tests, I was genuinely impressed by its performance. The Vortex Diamondback Tactical 4 16×44 review is definitely one of my favorite reviews of 2024 thus far.

In this article, you can expect a detailed review of the Diamondback’s key elements, including magnification power, reticle type, and field of view. We also provide you with some factors you should consider before buying the scope, like affordability, use case, magnification, and brand reputation.

How Do I Rate The Diamondback Tactical 4-16×44 FFP Scope?

We tested 12 characteristics of the Diamondback Tactical, ranging from reticle type to eye relief.

  1. Magnification Power
  2. Lens Quality
  3. Reticle Type
  4. Durability and Build Quality
  5. Adjustment Features
  6. Eye Relief
  7. Field of View
  8. Weight and Size
  9. Compatibility with the Rifle
  10. Price and Budget
  11. Brand Reputation
  12. Scope Use Case

1. Magnification Power

The Diamondback has a 4-16x magnification, which is perfect for a hunting rifle like the 6.5 Creedmoor and .308 Win. I quite enjoyed testing it on a dynamic whitetail hunt. The scope performed excellently in dense brush and just as good in the open plains.

2. Lens Quality

Vortex is known for its optical quality, and with the Diamondback, this is really evident. The glass quality of this scope is impeccable. Paired with fully multi-coated lenses with XD lens elements, you get incredible optical performance in bright and low-light conditions.

3. Reticle Type

The Diamondback is a first focal plane scope, featuring an EBR-2C MOA or MRAD reticle. It’s hash-marked in the form of a Christmas tree style (my favorite), allowing you to make accurate windage and elevation corrections.

4. Durability and Build Quality

The Diamondback offers incredible durability, as can be expected – it is a Vortex scope, after all! It outperforms most tactical scopes I’ve tested in terms of durability and construction quality.

Whether it’s enduring a beating on a hunting trip in the Rockies or surviving scratches from the dense woods up north, this scope is certainly up for the challenge!

5. Adjustment Features

The tall, exposed tactical target turrets can be a bit of a pain if you’re relying on agility and don’t want to get snagged. But the tall windage knob does offer a user-friendly adjustment platform.

The scope offers 1/4 MOA adjustment graduation, which is perfect for hunting and general shooting. The max adjustment range for windage and elevation is 85 MOA.

6. Eye Relief

At 3.8 inches of eye relief, it offers better eye relief than some of the extreme long-range shooting scopes I’ve tested. This eye-relief distance is very comfortable, especially if you wear glasses.

7. Field of View

The 26.9-6.7 ft/100 yds field of view is right on par with most scopes of this caliber. However, I would’ve liked the FOV to be a bit wider for the lower magnifications just to increase situational awareness capabilities.

8. Weight and Size

At 23.1 oz and 14.06 inches in length, it’s neither too heavy nor too bulky. It balanced well on my new long-range rifle, which speaks to the quality of the scope, as I’m usually very finicky about scope placement and the feel of the scope on my rifle.

9. Compatibility with the Rifle

The Diamondback is compatible with most rifles, including all hunting and tactical rifles that provide a mounting platform. Just ensure your scope rings are large enough and that your mounting platform is secure.

10. Price and Budget

Priced at $579.99, it’s definitely one of the value plays of 2024. If you’re considering buying a scope with a first focal plane reticle and don’t want to spend too much money but still want premium quality, this is the first scope you should consider.

11. Brand Reputation

Vortex produces some of the best scopes currently on the market. They have a solid reputation for quality optics, and this scope is no exception. Furthermore, their customer service is exceptional. I’ve never had problems with my queries; they’re always quickly resolved and with a smile on my face.

12. Scope Use Case

From training rifles to competition rigs, this scope adapts beautifully. It’s particularly impressive for medium shooting, making it ideal for hunters and competitive shooters.

What Are The Most Important Factors To Consider Before Buying A Vortex Diamondback?

If you’re considering buying the Vortex Diamondback, you should focus on its use case, magnification, price, and brand reputation

  1. Use Case: Do you fit the criteria for its use case – medium-range shooting, hunters, and competitive shooters?
  2. Magnification: Will the magnification fulfill your needs? The magnification is ideal for targets below 500 yards.
  3. Price: Although it offers great value, does it still align with your budget?
  4. Brand Reputation: Vortex produces excellent optics, so you don’t really have to worry about the quality of the brand you’re investing in.

Is The Diamondback Tactical Scope Good For Hunters?

The Diamondback Tactical is an excellent scope for hunters. The medium magnification, durability, and lens crispness are three of the main reasons why this scope competes with some of the best hunting scopes.

Do Vortex Rifle Scopes Have Variable Magnification?

Yes, Vortex rifle scopes, including the Diamondback Tactical, offer variable magnification. Variable magnification is invaluable when you need to adapt to different shooting scenarios. It’s especially useful for use in LPVO scopes.

Is The Diamondback Tactical Optic Worth It For The Cost?

As mentioned, I believe the Diamondback Tactical is one of the best value buys of 2024. It’s definitely worth the cost, considering all the features you get for that price point. However, if the price doesn’t align with your budget, then I’d recommend you look at low light scopes under $500.

Does Vortex Have A Great Reputation?

Vortex is renowned for its quality optics and customer-centric policies. Like Leupold, their products consistently deliver on performance and reliability.

The Bottom Line

The Diamondback Tactical 4-16×44 FFP Scope is one of my favorite scopes I’ve tested in 2024 thus far. It’s a versatile, durable, and accurate scope that offers great value. Whether you’re a novice shooter or a seasoned hunter, this scope is the perfect addition to your rifle. We hope you found this review helpful.
